Programs are free unless otherwise noted. Donations are gratefully accepted. For events that require reservations, or for questions, please call the NJBG office at (973) 962-9534.

All events begin or take place at the Carriage House Visitor Center unless otherwise specified.

State Park Parking Fee: On summer Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, there is a State Park parking fee of $5 for New Jersey-registered vehicles and $7 for non-New Jersey-registered vehicles. Oversized vehicles (vehicles that occupy more than one normal parking space, including vehicles with trailers, RVs, etc.) are charged double the normal rate. At all other times, parking is free.

Skylands is a carry-in, carry-out State Park facility. Please carry your trash and litter back out with you and dispose of it properly.

Remember, no pets, picnics, alcohol, balls, frisbees, nor lawn games are permitted in the Botanical Garden.

Free Guided Garden Tours - Sundays, 2 p.m., May through October. Steady rain cancels. Meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center and wear comfortable shoes.

In The Winter

The Botanical Garden's plants have settled in for a quiet snow-clad season, but there's still a lot going on. Many different types of birds are easy to spot in the bare trees, and you'll find the tracks and traces of deer and other garden residents. Look for the winter jasmine in bloom on the west side of the Manor, and the witchhazel collection near the Annex, which offers yellow and orange sunshine amid February snows. The Garden's main roads and parking lots are always promptly cleared of snow, so winter is a great time to come visit and take a walk. Or, if you like snowshoes or cross-country skis, you'll find plenty of varied terrain to explore in the meadows and woodlands that surround the Garden. Free.

January 2018

  • January 1 (Monday), 1 pm-3:30 pm
    First Day Hike. Cancelled due to extreme cold.
  • January 7 (Sunday), 11 am-3 pm
    Skylands Manor Tours. NJBG volunteer docents lead visitors on a tour of the architecture and history of Skylands Manor. Fee: $7 adults; $5 seniors and students ages 13-18; $3 ages 6-12; free under 6.
  • January 20 (Saturday), 10 am
    Landscape Design at Skylands: A Historical Perspective. Join Head Landscape Designer Rich Flynn for a slide program on the history of garden design at Skylands, originally created by some of the most famous landscaping names of the era. The program will be held in the Carriage House, and cancels only in the event of an ongoing snowstorm. $5 Donation requested.
  • January 21 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Family Woodland Hike. Join NJBG hike leaders on an easy, child-friendly hike in the Garden's woodlands. Learn a bit about the plants, animals, and geology around you in a hike designed to fit the group. Smaller children may need to be carried. Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center. Rain or snow cancels. Free.

February

  • February 4 (Sunday), 11 am-3 pm
    Skylands Manor Tours. NJBG volunteer docents lead visitors on a tour of the architecture and history of Skylands Manor. Fee: $7 adults; $5 seniors and students ages 13-18; $3 ages 6-12; free under 6.
  • February 18 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Family Winter Woodland Hike. Join NJBG hike leaders on an easy, child-friendly hike in the Garden's woodlands. Learn a bit about the plants, animals, and geology around you in a hike designed to fit the group. Smaller children may need to be carried. Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center. Rain or snow cancels. Free.
  • February 25 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Audubon: Endangered Species - From Exploitation to Conservation. Don Torino, President of Bergen County Audubon Society, will discuss the many species of birds that were exploited and became endangered. This indoor program will also cover the conservation efforts involved to protect them, helping many make a remarkable comback. In the Carriage House Visitor Center. Snow cancels. Free.

March

  • March 4 (Sunday), 11 am-3 pm
    Skylands Manor Tours - Member Appreciation Day. NJBG members are invited to enjoy a special tour of historic Skylands Manor. Non-members are invited too. Snow cancels. BOGO for NJBG members: Purchase a Manor House tour ticket receive a free one for a guest (BOGO). Non-members: Become a member on Member Appreciation Day and receive a free Manor House tour ticket. Regular Fee: $7 adults, $5 senior and students ages 13-18, $3 ages 6-12, free under age 6.
  • March 17 (Saturday), 10 am
    End-of-Winter Tree Walk. Join Head Landscape Designer Rich Flynn as he leads this perennial favorite. Learn the differences between trees and how to tell them apart in this special tree walk. Meet at the Carriage House; wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. Free.
  • March 18 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Family Winter Woodland Hike. Join NJBG hike leaders on an easy, child-friendly hike in the Garden's woodlands. Learn a bit about the plants, animals, and geology around you in a hike designed to fit the group. Smaller children may need to be carried. Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center. Rain or snow cancels. Free.
  • March 25 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Audubon: Attracting Hummingbirds. Don Torino, President of Bergen County Audubon Society, provides an indoor presentation on how you can attract these beautiful flying jewels to your garden using native and annual nectar plant sources. You'll also learn how to participate in Audubon's citizen science project: Hummingbirds at Home. In the Carriage House Visitor Center. Free.

YOUR GARDEN
Come visit often for a constantly-changing display of color and bloom sure to cheer your heart. The Botanical Garden is open every day from 8 am to 8 pm Garden admission is always free. $5 per New Jersey-registered car parking fee on summer weekends and holidays (weekends, Memorial Day to Labor Day), $7 for out-of-state registered cars. Oversized vehicles (including trailers and RVs) pay double. Weekday parking is free.

MANOR TOURS
...are offered on Sunday afternoons, March through November. Knowledgeable docents will introduce you to the architecture and history of beautiful Skylands Manor. Adults: $7; Seniors: $5; Students 13-18: $5; Children 6-12: $3; Under 6: Free. Please check the calendar for exact dates and times.

GIFT SHOP
Sunday afternoons from 12 noon-4 pm, April through December (weather permitting). Great gift ideas, shirts, books, garden supplies, and children's items. Credit cards accepted.

HIKE & BIKE
Always a pleasure on the Garden's many safe and beautiful hiking & biking trails.

FAMILY WOODLAND WALK
Our easy, child-friendly walks one Sunday afternoon each month are a great way to explore nature. Free.

VOLUNTEER IN THE GARDEN
NJBG volunteers help maintain the gardens, give tours, and offer many other public services. To volunteer, inquire at the office or call (973) 962-9534. We'd love to have you!

PLEASE REMEMBER...
